Which is why we love this video from our Circus Street development in Brighton. In just a few short minutes, it reveals the heart of U+I’s approach to regeneration and its commitment to delivering maximum value to the people and places we work amongst.
Semi-derelict since 2005, the former municipal fruit and veg market building sprang back into life in 2013 to become a temporary space for a number of creative and community-focused projects, hosting a wide range of events, festivals and installations.
The use of the space in the short-term reflected the longer-term plans for Circus Street – alongside new homes and student accommodation, there will be a new base for the internationally acclaimed South East Dance, a library and arts facility for the University of Brighton and a fresh injection of business and start up space.
The Circus Street Market temporary space closed in 2015, but the centrality of genuine and consistent community engagement remains.
‘Meanwhile use’ is core to our approach to regeneration, turning empty spaces and places into opportunities for communities, creatives and small businesses. In all of our developments we investigate potential opportunities to temporarily utilise buildings or land to meet the socio-economic needs of the local community, ideally in a way that can be maintained within the longer-term regeneration.
Just across town in Brighton for example, as part of our Preston Barracks regeneration scheme, FIELD Brighton recently opened as a hub for the city’s most exciting start-ups and initiatives. From edible insects to educational tech, a vast array of Brighton’s brightest are utilising this space to take their innovations forward. Whilst FIELD is a temporary space, it is sowing the seeds for the exciting longer-term plans for the site, which will be discussed in upcoming public consultations.
