We’re thrilled to announce that The Deptford Project won the Placemaking Award at the 2017 Property Awards on Tuesday 4th April.
The Property Awards, organised by Property Week, celebrate the very best the industry has to offer. Picked from a shortlist of eight other developments - The Deptford Project was recognised by the industry for its best-in-class placemaking.
The Deptford Project’s journey began back in 2008 when Lewisham Council and U+I came together to transform the derelict 2-acre site into a new space for Deptford’s community.
The mandate from Lewisham Council was clear; create a new community for Deptford that helps to revitalise the high street and make the place a go-to destination.
While under construction, we used an old train carriage as a hub of 5 years’ worth of community activity, as well as letting the railway arches on temporary license to a group of creative business start-ups and curating community activity around a temporary market place.
Local start-up businesses were then invited to apply through an open call out for the commercial units. Through a careful selection process, U+I shaped a new approach to working with businesses which created a particular sense of place that has fitted with the local community whilst supporting local enterprise.
Commenting on U+I’s approach to creating places in the latest issue of Matter, U+I’s Chief Executive Matthew Weiner says: “We want to create places where people feel they belong, places they can enjoy and places they can feel proud of. We cannot do that by imposing our views. And we cannot do that by closing ourselves off from existing communities. Instead, we have to be open to the opinions of the people whose lives we are going to change. We have to actively seek out their views, listen to what they have to say and, where possible, act on their ideas.”
The Deptford Project was completed with the launch of Deptford Market Yard in October 2016, the retail element of this mixed used project which is now the new home for independent retail in South-East London. From a purveyor of African womenswear to sellers of gourmet cheese toasties, an eclectic range of tenants have added even more vibrancy to this bustling, up-and-coming area.
