8 Albert Embankment
In partnership with the London Fire Brigade (LFB), in 2016 we were given the mandate for the regeneration of 8 Albert Embankment into a mixed-use community.
The site, which overlooks the Thames and the Houses of Parliament, houses the iconic Lambeth Fire Station and former Fire Brigade headquarters. The shared vision for 8 Albert Embankment is to transform the riverside location working with architects Pilbrow and Partners.
With a contemporary fire station at its heart the project will combine features of the existing building and its training yard within a space which modernises the site and entices the local community.
Alongside the operating station will be a permanent London Fire Brigade Museum, formerly located in Southwark. The museum is an important educational centre and will provide a world class collection which tells the story of firefighting, from the Great Fire of London to the present day.
Proposals also include 443 new homes, 40% of which will be affordable; 1,264 jobs across 100,000 sq ft of new workspace and new public spaces across the site.
U+I is engaging with the local community and council to shape the development collaboratively. To facilitate our efforts, in November 2016 we opened our new Worthwhile Use community and events space – The Workshop. Alongside a London Fire Brigade pop-up museum, the space was home to the Migration Museum, the Institute of Imagination and a number of social and start up enterprises and artists, all with creativity at their heart.
In December 2019 Lambeth Council’s Planning Applications Committee voted in favour of U+I and the London Fire Brigade’s proposals for the redevelopment of the site. 8 Albert Embankment demonstrates U+I’s firm position as a private partner with extensive expertise of PPP regeneration projects, and a growing portfolio of significant schemes such as Mayfield in Manchester or Preston Barracks in Brighton.
