Property regeneration specialist U+I has announced that a selection of popular restaurants will be joining the flagship Friarsgate development in Lichfield, which is set to revitalise the city centre as part of the regeneration of the shopping centre. Residents and visitors to Friarsgate will now have a choice of three new dining options; Pizza Express, Zizzi and the Handmade Burger Company.
The forthcoming restaurant offerings follow the announcement this summer that The Light Cinema will open a seven screen cinema at this major new mixed-use hub for Lichfield. Good progress is also being made on retail lettings for the scheme and these will be announced in the coming months. Combined, these attractions will help to realise the project’s vision of creating a new destination in the heart of the city centre.
The new restaurants and The Light Cinema will be in good company, with a gym, approximately 25 shops, 82 apartments and 11 townhouses also planned for Friarsgate. The combination of leisure and retail opportunities is expected to increase shopping turnover from £55m to £107m by 2022 and is forecast to create 660 new full-time equivalent jobs for the area.
Richard Upton, Deputy CEO of U+I, commented: “U+I is passionate about adding value to local areas, and the generation of jobs and growth is key to our approach. Pizza Express, Zizzi and the Handmade Burger Company will help boost activity, footfall and dwell time in the city centre, enhancing what Friarsgate has to offer.
"Providing high quality leisure facilities is essential to the vision for Friarsgate and alongside The Light Cinema, today's announcement demonstrates our commitment to the success of the project. We look forward to announcing more brand partners set to join the scheme in the near future.”
Cllr Mike Wilcox, Leader of Lichfield District Council, said: “We’re thrilled to be announcing that Pizza Express, Zizzi and the Handmade Burger Company will be opening their doors in Lichfield. These very popular restaurants will no doubt be a huge hit with visitors and locals and provide a great food offering for the Friarsgate scheme.”
The development will enhance transport connectivity within Lichfield, delivering a new bus station for the city near to the railway station, as well as 500 safe and accessible car parking spaces. It will complement the existing retail, leisure and residential offering whilst preserving the historical and traditional feel of the city.
