Leadership, culture and people

Finding and working with talented, creative and capable people is essential to our success, whether they are employees or part of our trusted network of partners.

Putting the right people and talent at the heart of our business is vital – across our Board, its Committees, the Leadership Team and all our staff. Our People First Approach is one of our Strategic Priorities. Our management team consists of our Directors, Non-executive Directors and Leadership Team, who are responsible for leading the Company and its employees.

Matthew Weiner

What drives me?

“To deliver on our purpose of creating great places in forgotten parts of London, Manchester and Dublin. Testing the tension between profitability and social benefit in everything we do and doing so whilst leading and inspiring a great team of people who will take on this responsibility.”

Experience:

Matthew was appointed as Chief Executive in 2015, after previously serving on the Board of Development Securities PLC as a Director since 2004. While at Development Securities, Matthew spearheaded the Company’s acquisition activities, completing transactions with a GDV of well over £3bn. Prior to joining Development Securities, Matthew worked as a Fund Manager at both Legal & General and AXA Investment Management looking after segregated Fund management mandates across all property sectors.

Richard Upton

What drives me?

Experience: Richard was appointed as Deputy Chief Executive of U+I in 2015, having previously been appointed to the Board in May 2014. He was the founder and Chief Executive of specialist regeneration property developer Cathedral Group, which was acquired by Development Securities PLC in May 2014. He was previously a founding Director of Mount Anvil, a leading London house builder and in 2018 was appointed as a Commissioner for Historic England.

Marcus Shepherd

What drives me?

Appointed: 18 February 2013
Experience: Marcus joined Development Securities, now U+I, as Financial Director in 2013, bringing extensive experience in real estate finance. Before joining he worked at Aviva Investors where he was Chief Financial Officer (Europe), Valad Property Group and Teesland PLC where he was Financial Director. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Peter Williams

What drives me?

“Human beings need contact and communication with other people, it’s what brings us the most happiness. The best form of communication is face to face in a sympathetic environment or place, whether that’s a home, office, restaurant, pub or club. U+I creates those places.”

Experience:

Peter was appointed a Non-executive Director for U+I in 2016, becoming Chairman following the 2016 Annual General Meeting. He is the former CEO of Selfridges and brings over 30 years of board-level experience. Alongside this role, Peter is currently a Senior Independent Director at Rightmove plc and at Sportech plc and a trustee of the Design Council.

Nick Thomlinson

What drives me?

Experience:

Nick is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He is a former senior partner and Chairman of the Knight Frank Group. Nick was appointed Senior Independent Director of the Company following the 2016 Annual General Meeting.

Lynn Krige

What drives me?

“It’s about making your mark. From a company, to a project, to people; with all interactions you have to make your mark to ensure that you have a positive influence and leave a sustainable legacy.”

Experience:

Lynn is currently Chief Financial Officer at WELL Group and brings over 25 years’ experience from across the construction, infrastructure, investment and B2B services sectors. She has previously held executive roles at British Engineering Services Limited, Speedy Hire PLC and John Laing PLC, originally qualifying with Deloitte in South Africa.

Barry Bennett

What drives me?

Experience:

Barry is a chartered accountant with significant experience in the financial and property sectors and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. Barry was previously a founding Director of Mount Anvil, a London house builder and in 2002 founded specialist regeneration real estate developer, Cathedral Group with Richard Upton.

Ros Kerslake OBE

What drives me?

“Making places that genuinely work for people and communities. I joined the U+I Board because they share those values.”

Experience:

Ros is Chief Executive Officer of the Heritage Lottery Fund and brings over 30 years of property, regeneration and corporate experience. Ros is also currently non-executive chairwoman of the Regeneration Leaders Network. In 2016, Ros was awarded an Order of the British Empire for her services to British Heritage.

Simon Hesketh

Director, Regeneration

Experience:

Having joined Development Securities, now U+I, in 1997, Simon is responsible for the delivery of the Company’s regeneration projects, including its PPP projects. Simon originally focused on the Company’s major office-led development portfolio and has been responsible for some of U+I’s largest projects to date including 10 and 12 Hammersmith Grove, Vertium in Dublin, The Old Vinyl Factory and 8 Albert Embankment.

James Bishop

Director, Acquisitions

Experience:

James Bishop joined Cathedral Group, now U+I, in 2004 and is responsible for securing U+I’s pipeline of Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects and land opportunities. James has played a key role in securing a number of U+I’s mixed-use projects including The Deptford Project, St Mark’s Square in Bromley and Mayfield in Manchester.

Mark Richardson

Director, Delivery

Experience:

Mark joined U+I in 2016 to oversee the senior strategic leadership around the delivery of U+I’s regeneration portfolio. Previously Pre-Construction Director at Laing O’Rourke, Mark has worked on some of the capital’s most recognisable projects, including One Hyde Park, The Francis Crick Institute and Leadenhall.

Eoin Condren

Director, Joint Ventures

Experience:

Eoin joined U+I in 2018 to oversee non-public sector joint venture relationships, and source and execute acquisitions in our three key geographies, with a specific focus on Dublin. Eoin has a wealth of real estate private equity experience having held roles at W.P. Carey and Brandeaux as Vice President and Associate Director respectively.

Martyn Evans

Creative Director

Experience:

Martyn spent 17 years with Cathedral Group, now U+I, including six years on the board before leaving to become the Development Director at the 1,200-acre Dartington Hall Estate in Devon in 2016. He returned to U+I in 2019 to deliver the creative strategy at the heart of our purpose-driven regeneration development portfolio. Martyn is Non Executive Chair of Croydon Council's development company, Brick by Brick, a Non Executive Director of the online community engagement platform, Commonplace, Deputy Chair of the London Festival of Architecture and founder of The Young Architects and Developers Alliance (YADA), a networking organisation that fuels partnership and understanding between young architects and developers. He has been a jury member of the AJ's Small Projects, The Architect of the Year, the NLA and the Estates Gazette Awards, writes a regular column in BDOnline and contributes to the Estates Gazette.

Prof. Sadie Morgan

What drives me?

“I have a real sense of inclusion, purpose, community and responsibility. I joined the Board to help U+I turn those beliefs and commitments into action, making sure grand plans join up with real life.”

Experience:

Sadie is founding director of Stirling Prize winning architecture practice dRMM. She became the youngest president of the Architectural Association in 2013, and in 2016, was appointment Professor of professional practice at the University of Westminster and awarded an honorary doctorate from London South Bank University. Sadie chairs the Independent Design Panel for High Speed Two and is a commissioner of the National Infrastructure Commission. In 2017 she was appointed as a mayor’s design advocate for the Greater London Authority.

Craig White

Director, Content

Experience:

Craig joined U+I in 2019 to oversee content, with a focus on helping to bring our sites to life through localised opportunities and community-led projects. Prior to joining U+I, from 2014 onwards, he led the Retail division at Argent, directing and managing the leasing of 500,000 sq. ft. of retail, restaurant and leisure space across the King’s Cross scheme, hand picking brands and operators, with a special focus on the Coal Drops Yard project. Prior to King’s Cross, from 2008, Craig was responsible for strategic retail business development at The Crown Estate for both its Regent Street & St James's Portfolios.
